Engineers who are negligent or incompetent in the design and/ or construction of a safety-critical building may be up for higher penalties if the New Zealand government takes on advice from the Institution of Professional Engineers New Zealand (IPENZ). In response to the central government's proposals to strengthen the regulation of engineers as a result of recommendations of the Canterbury Earthquakes Royal Commission and a review of the professional engineers' regulatory system, IPENZ has thrown its support behind imposing stronger penalties.
