The federal and NSW governments have announced $3.5 billion of investment in roads infrastructure over the next 10 years, including transport links to take advantage of the economic benefits of the recently announced Badgerys Creek airport. Funding will be 80% federal and 20% state. The federal government said the investment will create 4000 jobs in addition to the tens of thousands of jobs that will be created by the new airport. This plan will deliver significant upgrades to major and local roads, with the most expensive project being an upgrade to the Northern Road between the M4 Motorway and Narellan in southwest Sydney. With an estimated cost of $1.6 billion, the upgrade covers a 31km stretch that would increase the number of lanes from two to four, with a wide median to allow for a possible future upgrade to six. Construction is scheduled to commence in 2015-16 and conclude in 2019-2020.
