Rio Tinto's $330 million Bungaroo water facility in Western Australia has been officially opened, providing 10GL/a of water for the company's Pilbara iron ore coastal operations as well as the towns of Dampier and Wickham. The facility can be remotely managed from the company's Mesa J mine in the Pilbara region and its operations centre in Perth, with data telemetered to the Water Corporations Perth control centre. Rio Tinto chief executive iron ore, Japan, Korea and China, Andrew Harding, said the commissioning of this facility "secures a sustainable water source for the expansion of capacity towards 360Mt/a".
