Indigenous inspiration for engineer

A serendipitous day trip inspired Aurecon water engineer Stephanie Hamel to become a volunteer with Engineers without Borders (EWB), a not for profit organisation focused on providing systemic change for disadvantaged communities through humanitarian engineering. Hamel's association with EWB's Victoria chapter started with a simple decision to join her sister on a day excursion to what would be her first indigenous smoking ceremony. It was organised by the Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islanders Focus Group, and during the ceremony she listened to stories by an Aboriginal elder from the Wurundjeri-william people of the Kulin Nation (the traditional owners of the land where the Melbourne suburb of Yarra is now situated).
