Bowling out risk - an engineer's perspective on cricket

The death of cricketer Phillip Hughes after he was struck by a ball in a Sheffield Shield match in November 2014 made me think about what we can do to make sport safer. After 15 years working in a large corporate engineering firm, I've been drilled more than a few times in safety moments, toolbox talks and safety workshops, as have most engineers. There is much that can be applied outside the traditional field of engineering.
