PLASTIC BALLS REDUCE EVAPORATION

In an effort to reduce evaporation and prevent sunlight-triggered chemical reactions in drinking water, the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power poured 96 million shade balls into its 175-acre reservoir. The project triggered criticism but the LADWP has defended it, saying, "These 'doom and gloom' theories are nonsense, and quite frankly, flat out wrong." An article In Fox News mainly criticised the black colour of the balls, suggesting they would absorb heat from the sun and, in the process, create a warm, dark, moist environment which would encourage bacteria to grow.
