It seemed to be a marriage made in heaven. Roy Kay Inc., a growing Freehold, N.J.-based open-shop contractor that had been the target of a withering campaign by the building trades unions, sold itself to Keyspan, the big energy company. Before concluding the sale in January 2000, owner LeRoy Kay and son David signed pacts with the building trades and seemed ready for a new prosperous and more peaceful chapter in the company's history.
