One of the hottest tickets these days is for ringside seats at meetings of the Florida Board of Professional Engineers. By allowing engineers to earn mandatory continuing education credits by visiting or watching sessions, particularly disciplinary hearings, state officials have forced practitioners to confront an aspect of engineering that normally receives little attention. The practice started about a year ago and Florida is the only state that allows engineers to obtain some of their continuing education credits in this manner. It is getting mixed reviews. Most engineers who have watched the bimonthly meetings in person or on videotape say they have a greater appreciation for the board and its work. But 30% say they are disgusted and dismayed over what they saw, according to a survey of 58 engineers by SunCam.com, a Miami-based service that tapes board meetings.
