Settlement Prepares the Way For Potential $800-Million Job

Planning, design work and environmental reviews will begin immediately on a program to restore continuous flow to California's San Joaquin River following settlement of an 18-year-long legal dispute over operation of Friant Dam. The settlement agreement prepares the way for a 10-year program that could reopen the state's second-longest river to water transport and enable it again to sustain chinook salmon and other fish in a 153-mile stretch from the dam to the Merced River. The dam's construction in the 1940s largely dried up about 60 miles of river.
