Preparing Smart Sensors for Industrie 4.0: Requirements, Potentials, and Solutions

The vision of Industrie 4.0 (I4.0) breaks up with the traditional automation pyramid by linking up production and business levels. Physical and digital worlds are interconnected in cyber-physical systems to create flexible and intelligent automation systems for the future. The basis of this digitalisation process is built up by the currently wired sensors and actuators, which have to face now new requirements in order to support all of the upcoming I4.0 developments. Therefore, this work shows the state of the art regarding I4.0 concepts and the available wireless technologies from this domain. The afterwards presented real-world use case and the corresponding prototypical implementation illustrate the contemporary possibilities and identify open questions for the research domain. These research topics are identified and summarized at the end including promising contents, such as the Asset Administration Shell (AAS) and the Blockchain technology.
