Multi-State Gas Line Replacement Aided by Horizontal Directional Drilling

A pipeline from El Paso, TX, to Phoenix, AZ, required complex drilling in thirteen challenging and sometimes remote locations. Contracted by Rockford Corporation, the project started on June 15 and involved replacing an 8-in. gas pipeline with both a 12-in. and a 16-in. gas pipeline. "The project took four months and required the crew to work in desert temperatures as high as 115 degrees," says Kurt Peterson, superintendent for Mears Group, Inc. of Houston, TX. Peterson oversaw the project with eight crew members assisting with the installation, which totaled 11,700 ft of horizontal directional drilling (HDD).
