An extremely long bore helped assure successful completion of a segment of the Hampton Roads Crossing project, a natural-gas pipeline for Virginia Natural Gas (VGN) that links Norfolk to Newport News. "This is the longest pullback of 24-in pipe that we've ever undertaken," says Mike Vidomski, site supervisor with Mears Group Inc. It allowed installation of 7,357-ft of a 24-in. steel pipeline under the Elizabeth River. Mears used a 660,000-Ib drilling rig to complete the pilot hole, achieving a depth of 110 ft over the length of the crossing. Because local conditions presented challenges to traditional land-based steering methods, Mears teamed with the general contractor, Weeks Marine Inc., to equip a barge with a mobile coil set-up.
