Nuclear Power License Application for Plants Heralds 'Nuclear Renaissance' With the filing of the first license application for a new nuclear powerplant in 29 years, the much-heralded "nuclear renaissance" moved into a new stage. NRG Energy, Princeton, N.J., filed the combined construction and operating license application for two new units with the Nuclear Regulatory Commission on Sept. 24, says Scott Burnell, NRC spokesman. The advanced boiling-water reactors, with total rated capacity of 2,700 MW, will be built at the South Texas Project, Matagorda County, Texas. The estimated cost is about $5.3 billion. NRG is negotiating contract arrangements with Toshiba, Bechtel, GE and Hitachi. Construction could begin by mid-2010. The plants should come on line in 2014 and 2015, says NRG.
