GOOD NEWS FOR UNDERGROUND CONSTRUCTION

One of the objectives in this year's first of two dedicated sections is to get a reading on the size and breadth of the underground-construction market. Some experts lent the results of their daily exposure to the industry. Paul Schmall, vice president and chief engineer of Moretrench, a New York City-based geotechnical contractor, says, "New York City is the place to be for underground work—tunneling as well as deep excavation. With many of the large projects currently transportation- related, and significant portions of this new construction needing to be 'squeezed in' underground, several 'themes' are evident: expose and support the existing subways, don't disrupt the existing flow of trains, and don't disturb the myriad of existing buildings.
