Team Chosen for Meldahl Hydroelectric Project

Harnessing the power of the Ohio River is no easy task, but the Meldahl Hydroelectric Project seeks to capture 522 gigawatt-hours of electric power annually from the river near Augusta, Ky. The project will entail channeling water from the existing Meldahl locks and dam into a I,850-ft-long approach channel feeding three horizontal turbine-generator units before discharging back into the river downstream of the locks and dam. American Municipal Power Inc. (AMP), headquartered in Columbus, Ohio, along with the City of Hamilton, Ohio, are co-licensees for the project, which will help provide clean, renewable electricity to the city and AMP members. Alberici/ Baker JV LLC, a joint venture between Alberici Constructors of St Louis and Baker Concrete Construction of Monroe, Ohio, was selected to construct the powerhouse phase of the project. The new hydroelectric plant will include three 3 5MW bulb turbine-generators manufactured by Voith, which will be housed in a submersible powerhouse built with 109,000 cu yd of reinforced mass concrete.
