New construction starts in May declined 16% from the previous month, according to seasonally adjusted annual data published by McGraw-Hill Construction. However, most of the monthly decline is the result of the influence earlier in the year of two large nuclear power projects. They added $8.5 billion to starts in both March and April. Excluding the lift from nuclear projects, total construction starts showed some improvement in April and May, following a decline in March, says MHC's chief economist, Robert Murray. "The recent trend has been upward after a particularly weak start in 2012," says Murray.
