The housing market is turning the corner after a long decline. The U.S. Dept. of Commerce reports that, in the first quarter of 2012, the dollar value of the private residential construction market is up 6.3% over the same period of a year ago (see p. 30). Lumber prices are responding to the modest rebound in the housing market with steady increases. ENR's 20-city average price for the most commonly used species of 2 X 4s has risen 3.9% since the beginning of the year.
