The discovery of cracks in the fracture-critical steel arch ties forced the closure of the 50-year-old Sherman Minton Bridge over the Ohio River on Sept. 9, 2011, creating a severe adverse impact on traffic and the economy in the region. As one of only two interstate crossings over the Ohio River between southern Indiana and Louisville, Ky., the two-span, 1,600-ft-long double-decker, steel arch truss bridge typically handles more than 70,000 vehicles per day.
