Oil Firms OK $34-Billion Ichthys LNG Project Off Australia Coast

Oil production firms Inpex Corp. and Total S.A. announced on Jan. 13 a final investment decision to build the Ichthy; liquefied natural gas (LNG) project off the coast of western Australia. When completed in about 2017, the estimated $34-billion project would be one of the world's largest LNG sites, producing about 8.7 million tonnes per year, the companies said. Most of the natural gas would go to Japan, analysts said, noting the project had been valued in 2008 at about $20 billion.
