Multi-Year Plant Overhaul Demands Multi-Faceted Formwork

The Metropolitan Water Reclamation District of Greater Chicago (MWRD) is in the midst of a multi-year upgrade and expansion to its Calumet Water Reclamation Plant (WRP) and surrounding supply network. The oldest of seven wastewater treatment facilities in metropolitan Chicago, the Calumet plant must expand to meet current and projected treatment capacity needs while using less energy and improving operations. At the inception of the project in 2009, the contractor F.H. Paschen, SN Neilsen & Associates (Paschen) knew it would need a variety of formwork components to facilitate the complex construction that includes an enclosed grit building and 12 new 155-ft-dia cast-in-place reinforced concrete, circular primary settling tanks, as well as several interconnecting service tunnels for piping and electrical conduits and tunnel-access pump stations.
