The International Green Construction Code, or IgCC, recently celebrated its first anniversary, and it already has been adopted by state and local jurisdictions in at least nine states. I believe this year will be crucial for IgCC. While the U.S. Green Building Council is raising the minimum thresholds of its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system, the IgCC is a new building code and its appeal to governments may soon become clearer. The jurisdictions that have adopted the IgCC-Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Maryland, New Hampshire, North Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island and Washington-for the most part have used it as a voluntary standard or as an optional compliance path to meet the applicable green building code. For example, Rhode Island and Keene, N.H., adopted IgCC as one of several compliance standards for green building requirements.
