Privately Funded Replacement Bridge Improves Inter-City Travel

Virginia's South Norfolk Jordan Bridge over the Elizabeth River connects Chesapeake and Portsmouth via a high-level fixed-span toll bridge. Opened in October 2012, it replaces a deficient lift bridge that was closed to traffic in 2008. The new structure was built in less than two years and was paid for through private funding provided by Figg Bridge Developers and Britton Hill Partners. Built using balanced cantilever construction, the concrete segmental bridge was entirely precast. "There were several cranes on site to keep everything moving," says Tom Hopkins with PVE Cranes & Services, Ltd. One of the PVE cranes on site included a 275-ton Kobelco 7250 model crane.
