Slope Reinforcement Preserves Historic Railroad Bridge

The historic Old Mississippi River Bridge, also known as Old Vicksburg Bridge, currently carries a single rail line and historically carried two lanes of traffic across the Mississippi River between Vicksburg, Miss., and Delta, La. During a routine inspection, inspectors found that the slope around the pilings of the 80-year-old bridge was actively sliding. Further studies found that some of the bridge pier caps buried by slope movement had not been inspected since the 1930s. As the general contractor, Hayward Baker was retained to stabilize the slope, preservinq the historical bridge.
