Stories Take Readers Into the Clouds

Readers know that ENR is a source of ideas about the future of construction. Last year, we held a construction science-fiction competition in which industry professionals explored what might be possible (ENR 11/4/13 p. 18). Back in 1974, we celebrated our 100th anniversary, by publishing a special edition called "Probing the Future." For this issue, ENR Projects Editor Scott Lewis, who tracks down construction record-breakers for digital-edition roundups, pitched the idea for a story on projects that are on the edge of becoming a reality (see p. 30). "Occasionally, I discover projects that are not ready for regular coverage," he says, "but they are fascinating." And mere are megaprojects-the Panama Canal, for example-that were once a dream but, eventually, became essential to the global economy, he notes. Lewis started exploring, aided by Debra Rubin, editor-at-large for business, and Tom Sawyer, senior editor for technology.
