Purdue University's Utility Plant Boiler Dismantled Within Containment Area

In October 2013, Purdue University awarded Brandenburg Industrial Service Company a contract to demolish the Wade Utility Plant Boiler No. 1 in West Lafayette, Ind. One of the major concerns that Purdue University has in any construction activity on campus is the safety of their staff, students, workers, the community and the environment. Brandenburg worked with Purdue University, the City of West Lafayette and other regulatory agencies to provide a safe working environment to meet the concerns of the university. Brandenburg demolition activities were conducted by using mechanical means, in accordance with an approved demolition permit. Preparation activities included the identification of materials and debris contained in the building that had to be removed prior to the start of demolition activities; disconnecting the utilities servicing the boiler; installation of a critical barrier wall; installation of splash barrier for demo debris; and the removal of the materials and/or debris contained within the building structures. Equipment and staging areas were established for the staging of mobile equipment, material, supplies, tools and lay-down areas for demolished materials prior to the demolition activities.
