With 7.8 billion tons of cargo passing through them each year and $8.6 trillion in economic activity, seaports are essential to the U.S. economy. "Our world has become, and each year is becoming even more, interconnected through trade," says Aaron Ellis, public affairs director for the American Association of Port Authorities. "International trade is a crucial element to our economy and way of life, and that trend is increasing. Also, America's population is growing, and with a growing population comes increased demand for goods. Finally, America's exports are also growing, and so too is the amount of 'Made in the USA components in the goods we import."
