3D Formwork Speeds Hydro Plant Construction

The Smithland hydroelectric plant on the Ohio River near Smithland, Ky., is under construction and scheduled for completion in 2015. By discharging water through the three bulb turbine units, the power plant will generate approximately 379 million kWh of gross annual output. The C.J. Mahan Construction Co., LLC is responsible for the reinforced concrete work. Mahan engaged PERI to provide customized formwork and shoring, including the fabrication of 3D formwork units and assembly of a wide range of shoring structures. "An extremely tight construction schedule, massive structural elements and multi-curved surfaces required a huge number of specially made 3D formwork units in addition to large quantities of system equipment," says Tom Burkart, vice president, U.S. Central Region, with PERI. Through trans-national efforts, PERI's teams in the U.S. and Germany collaborated on the engineers and pre-fabrication.
