Clarifying FAA's Proposed Rules for Construction

Administration's proposed framework for small unmanned aircraft vehicles (UAV) offers the building and construction industry some valuable insight into the likely rules of operation, restrictions and certifications that will become law in the next few years. Several of the safety rules outlined in the proposed document could impact how drones are used on a construction site. First, the requirement that the operator maintain visual line-of-site could be cumbersome when the technology is used to map areas with a larger footprint such as a large highway. While operators could be moved from location to location to maintain visual contact, it is not an ideal approach and nullifies some of the benefits of drones. This requirement is expected to receive the most pushback during the review period.
