Around the globe, airport construction is booming, with worldwide investment totaling some $900 billion at the beginning of the year, according to the CAPA Airport Construction Database. The largest development in the Asia Pacific segment is the Hong Kong International Airport, whose 1,100-sq-ft Midfield Concourse opened recently. Winning a competitive bid in 2010, a Mott MacDonald-Arup joint venture provided full multidisciplinary design and support. With an interior that surprises and delights passengers traveling on regional flights, Midfield is a big step forward in sustainability, says Ian Taylor, director of aviation for Arup in East Asia. Its more than 35 green features include LED lighting systems, solar panels, recycled water for the air-conditioning system and seawater for flushing. Additionally, the roof is formed in variable heights and orientation to reduce solar heat gain.
