Today's transportation infrastructure typically trends toward newer, longer and wider, but one niche in the industry focuses on true sustainability: maintaining older, shorter and narrower structures—namely, historic bridges. Volkert Inc. has inspected more than 40,000 bridges and tunnels across the country and rehabilitated nearly 100 historic bridges and trusses. According to Aaron Immel, vice president and bridge inspection manager, "Preservation may cost more than replacement initially, but when it's initiated at commissioning and maintained, a historic bridge can well outlast its life expectancy."
