Rethinking Flexibility and Collaboration in Modern Education Construction

Edward Hopkins Elementary in Hopkinton, Mass., was recently selected for an Award of Distinction by the Modular Building Institute. Among the attributes cited were the project team's ability to aesthetically match the 3,680-sq-ft addition to the existing building, and the innovative use of a single modular unit flipped on its side to create a 2-story connecting corridor between the new and existing structures. The most noteworthy feature, however, may be in how the project was conceived and executed. "This project demonstrated the perfect blend of design collaboration," says Glenn Cort, executive vice president of Triumph Modular, the project's contractor. "The owner had their architect in early in the programming and schematic phase. This then transi-tioned into a design-build model, with our architect as the architect of record. The owner's architect did construction administration and consulting for the owner, and we enjoyed the system of checks and balances with them throughout the process."
