River Islands Sewage Pump Station Concrete Gets Extra Dose of Protection

The new River Islands Sewage Pump Station, part of the City of Lathrop, Calif.'s sewer system development plan to support the River Islands community, faced two major challenges. First, as a sewage pump station, the concrete walls required protection from microbial induced corrosion (MIC), and second, 30 ft of the 40-ft-deep structure would be immersed in the surrounding water table. The original design specified an epoxy coating as the inner liner of the concrete walls as well an exterior waterproofing coating to protect the interior lining from negative side hydrostatic pressure push off-a costly and time-intensive solution, as crews would need to install and detail the interior coating. The contractor, PACE Advanced Engineering, proposed Xypex Bio-San C500 admix as an alternative. It contains Xypex's antimicrobial crystalline technology, which kills the Thiobacillus bacteria that causes acid corrosion of concrete and prevents the infiltration of ground water and exfiltration of sewage liquid. Added to the concrete at the time of batching, Bio-San C500 provided considerable cost, time and schedule savings compared to the initially specified coating.
