The repairs are underway for the fractured twin plate girders that span 80 ft across Fremont Street in the 4.5-block-long bus depot in San Francisco, but a reopening date is not yet set, says the Transbay Joint Powers Authority. TJPA closed the hub in late September, less than two months after opening it, after a ceiling installer discovered a major crack in the bottom flange of one of the tapered steel-plate girders. Remedial work also is underway on a similar bridge-like system spanning First Street, though inspectors found no cracks there. Steel plates under fabrication are scheduled to arrive next month for installation. Repairs, which call for bolted double splints at girders' midspans, should be done by the first week of June, before removal of supporting shoring.
