Emerging Water Solutions

Projects continue nationwide as cities and municipalities deal with population shifts and aging and/or inadequate water treatment systems. The city of San Mateo, Calif., is an example, as it is currently four years into a 12-year program to increase capacity and quality at its wastewater treatment campus. Capacity issues are of particular concern during heavy rains and in peak wet-weather conditions, leading to sanitary sewer overflows that contaminate streets, creeks, lagoons, beaches and the San Francisco Bay. To make matters worse, nearly half of the treatment and conveyance system is reaching the end of its life cycle, with some components between 40 and 75 years old.
