Engineering Economy Abstracts On-Line: A State-of-the-art Review

In 1970, Dr. Gerald Smith, Professor of Industrial Engineering at Iowa State University, began compiling abstracts of journal articles related to engineering economy. This tedious job continued through 1992 much as it had for the preceding 22 years, involving countless hours which resulted in abstracts that at best, had already been in print for one year. However, with the advent of computer technology this task has changed dramatically, resulting in improvements in efficiency, breadth, relevance, and timeliness. This paper is written as an installment in the lineage of the engineering economy abstracts. First, an overview of the history of compiling the abstracts is presented. Then a list of journals by emphasis area and key search words is provided which can be used in conjunction with a review of the databases and their on-line source for obtaining engineering economy abstracts. It is the intent of this paper that the resources that are available to support research in engineering economy will become more widely known and utilized so as to support the advancement of the field.
