To reach the goal of, developing a long-term advanced battery, consortium officials believe that approximately $38 million in additional federal appropriations will be needed. If these funds are received, the consortium hopes that pilot-plant production can begin by 2000. But if there is no indication that the extra funds will be available, consortium officials believe that some contracts may have to be terminated before sufficient data are available to aid in decision-making. They believe that such action would significantly reduce the chances for the successful development of a long-term battery.
