Suddenly, It's Synfuels

Despite the fact that there are a number of reported benefits of synthetic fuels, until recently, such fuels have been largely ignored or considered unimportant by most coal suppliers and coal-fired utilities. Among the benefits are: lower price on a delivered BTU basis; reduced SO_2 and NO_X emissions; increased heat input; lower particulate emissions; and the beneficial re-use of waste materials. Things have changed significantly though in the last two years, and coal-derived synthetic fuels have now become one of the most important issues facing the coal industry and a number of utility plants are purchasing and burning synfuels in their boilers.
