Russian natural gas giant Gazprom began deliveries on Oct. 5th to a new customer, Gasunie, a Dutch natural gas firm. On the same day, Gazprom also began production at Zapolyarnoye, a massive new field holding 3.2 trillion cubic meters of gas in western Siberia. These two events signal a shift in the balance of power between Europe and Russia. Europe now has no choice but to invest in Russia's natural gas industry to keep its own economies functioning. And Russia is expected to engage in a flurry of new infrastructure developments, which will make Gazprom a much more attractive investment partner for global energy firms.
