When David Kronick's dissertation was first published in 1962, certain aspects were criticized: the basic list of periodicals considered was not included; the categorizing of the periodicals was perhaps too artificial; areas such as technology, and formats such as ephemerides seemed to be slighted; the statistical tables seemed out of place and unreliable for interpretation; the index was troublesome; and some found it difficult to identify a basic purpose or hypothesis upon which the study was based. Reviewers particularly liked the survey of antecedent and contemporary forms of the periodical.
