Field experiment on the biodiversity and assessment of stream by macroinvertebrates

The healthy urban rivers both to maintain its natural functioning of ecosystems, but also to meet the normal needs of the urban society and economy, and also to provide a place for human entertainment. The assessment of rivers health is the foundation of environmental management and ecosystem monitoring. Macroinvertebrates are important components of stream ecosystems. A field experiment was conducted to study the composition, biomass and biodiversity of macroinvertebrates. This paper assesses the biotic integrity in the Fuxi River Watershed using the Index of Biotic Integrity of the Benthic Invertebrates (B-IBI). The aquatic invertebrate data were collected in July 2013 from sample sites in the main stream. After identification of these benthic invertebrates in the laboratory, B-IBI index were calculated using the scoring method. Statistical analysis shows a signification position correlation between the stream B-IBI and the habitat quality. Overall, the results show that Fuxi River is unhealthy, because it is adjacent to human settlement and normally located in the midstream and downstream with low riparian vegetation coverage, poor water quality, intensive human activities, and intensive land use. This indicates that the riparian land vegetation cover and land use significantly affect river health.
