Draft Strategy Focuses On Developing Hydro Potential

Public input will be sought on a draft hydro strategy to advance long-term development in the Northwest Territories (NWT).rnThe Draft NWT Hydro Strategy draft comprises 13 actions focused in four strategic areas:rn1. preparing for hydro development;rn2. protecting the environment;rn3. financing future hydroelectric projects; andrn4. developing the necessary policy framework.rnThe report suggested hydroelectric facilities in the NWT could provide communities and resource development - that would be insulated from volatile crude oil prices - for over 100 years.rnThe draft - introduced by Industry, Tourism and Investment Minister Bob McLeod - is intended to reflect the government commitment to reduce using imported diesel and lower the overall cost of living in the NWT.rn'The proposed Taltson River Hydro Expansion alone has the potential to save the purchase of more than 100 million litres of diesel fuel and eliminate up to 300 000 tonnes of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions annually," McLeod noted.
