Hydraulic hybrid power systems - an internal combustion engine paired with a hydraulic accumulator - offer several advantages when it comes to energy savings. But determining the proper balance between work done by the engine and work done by the accumulator is a difficult task, said Prof. Kim Stelson, director of the Center for Compact and Efficient Fluid Power (CCEFP) at the University of Minnesota. And finding that balance - the optimal Energy Management Strategy (EMS) - was the goal of a recent project led by Stelson, with the assistance of doctoral student Jon Meyer.
