EU's Push For Digital Sovereignty Dependent On Single Market And Member States

1. The EC has presented its plans for a Digital Decade, focusing on skills, digital transformation, infrastructure and public services. 2. Digital sovereignty is at the core of the strategy but, as with many other EC plans, there is a lot of ambition but very little detail in how to achieve it. 3. Completing the Digital Single Market is critical for the EU to become a global tech power, and for that it remains dependent on its member states. The European Commission (EC) has presented its plans for a Digital Decade, through a Digital Compass around four main areas: skills, digital transformation of businesses, secure and sustainable digital infrastructures, and digitalisation of public services (see table below). This builds on the plan it had presented in 2020, taking into account the impact of Covid-19, with the overarching ambition of digital sovereignty. This article will mostly focus on the infrastructure element of the plan.
