How Yin works: autocorrelation and parabolic interpretation

Instead of the fast Fourier transform, the Yin algorithm is based on another method that is often used in digital signal processing": autocorrelation. An autocorrelation is the sum of the point-by-point multiplication of all samples of a signal with the samples of an offset version of the same signal.
