Near Field Communication (NFC) technology for wireless data transfer can be used for contactless payment transactions, identification, or exchanging small amounts of data such as text messages, weblinks and the like. Several well-known semiconductor manufacturers, including STMicroeletronics, have NFC devices in their product lines, including low-power devices that can store data. These can be powered from the electromagnetic field used for wireless communication. That eliminates the need for a battery or other power supply. These ICs can be embedded in compact, sturdy tags in various forms, such as tokens or bank cards.
