As more portable and handheld devices move toward the use of sin-gle-cell lithium-ion (Li-ion) or lithium-ion polymer (Li-ion polymer) batteries, the need for sophisticated Li-ion chargers increases. In addition, as the space constraints of these systems shrink and more system functions are integrated, the thermal design becomes more challenging. This article focuses on linear chargers that have charging currents of 1A or less. Linear chargers offer the benefits of low component count and low cost, hence they are well suited for portable designs.
