In TV's early days, broadcast signals carrying the same information might arrive at a TV set's antenna via multiple, different-length paths, and thereby create headaches. When the signal traveled over these paths, the arriving signals were out of phase and interfered with one another. So a TV show might be plagued by "ghosts"-faint images that shadowed the main picture. In this digital era, this occurrence has been turned into an advantage, but at a cost in system complexity. However, making intelligent choices in selecting test gear can ensure that complexity doesn't result in a nonfunctional device.
