Since the introduction of the first IC op amp, huge advances have been made in both semiconductor processing and circuit design. For roughly 40 years, IC manufacturers have employed these advances to design nearly "ideal" amplifiers. Although by definition unachievable, the ideal op amp has provided a target for analog designers.
