Mems Gurus Seek Advances, Cash

In Monterey, CA, last month, leaders of the interna- tional MEMS industry wrestled with both the technol- ogy and financial challenges they are facing in the coming year. At minimum, they came away with a clearer picture of what lies ahead and where the economic bright spots are. The MEMS Executive Congress' formal sessions opened with a keynote presentation by Roger Meike, "Senior Director Area 51," at Sun Microsystems Laboratories. He introduced the audience to SunSPOT (Small Programmable Object Technology); about the size of a small cell phone, it consists of a open-source software, processor-USB-radio board, applications board, and battery. Essentially, SunSPOT is an inventor's platform, easily programmed with Java, that puts MEMS and other sensor/transducer technologies into the hands of creative people in many fields.
