The WiMedia Common Radio Platform forms the basis for implementation of Wireless Personal Area Networks (WPANs) capable of data rates up to 480 Mbits/s (with even greater data rates under development). This platform is not restricted to a single class of application but enables multiple different Protocol Adaption Layers (PALs) allowing peaceful co-existence between all of them (see Fig. 1). The WiMedia specifications make provision for like applications, such as Wireless USB, to work with each other (they interoperate), while dissimilar applications do not interfere with each other (they peacefully coexist). To date, the largest adopter of the platform has been Wireless USB from the USB Implemented Forum (USB-IF), but proprietary platforms for multimedia streaming, for example, have also been implemented. At the same time WiMedia alliance members are working closely with the Bluetooth SIG to make Bluetooth over UWB a reality - as a Bluetooth high-speed AMP implementation.
